Why does Sky Key charge a 25% of savings fee?
“If you have a dumb incentive system, you get dumb outcomes” – Charlie Munger.
From day 1, we wanted Sky Key’s incentive to be perfectly aligned with that of our customers. The goal was simple: when Sky Key wins, our customers win.
Naturally, we landed on a simple revenue model: charge 25% of whatever we save our customers.
So, if you sign up for Sky Key and save $0 on a flight, you pay $0. If Sky Key saves you $100, you pay $25.
In other words, Sky Key’s incentive is the same as yours. When Sky Key wins, you win.
How does Sky Key win when our customers win?
Sky Key only makes money when we save our customers money.
Again, if Sky Key saves you $0, you pay $0. If Sky Key saves you $100, you pay $25.
By aligning our revenue model with the outcomes of our customers (flight savings), it forces us to consistently deliver our A+ game for you.
How does Sky Key pricing work for miles/points flights?
When Sky Key captures you savings on a miles/points flight, we assume 100 miles/points = $1. In reality, they are worth much more- roughly 20-30% more.
Sky Key could make more by valuing the miles/points at their market rate, but it’s not well defined and therefore Sky Key defaults to a conservative valuation.
If you are curious, here’s an example of how Sky Key charges you for savings on miles/points flight:
- Step 1: Sky Key saves you 10,000 miles/points (let’s goooo!)
- Step 2: Sky Key converts this to $100*
- Step 3: Sky Key charges you 25% of the savings value ($25)
The end result? You save 10,000 miles/points and Sky Key takes a $25 finder’s fee.
When do I get charged for savings?
When your flight departs.
Are there any other ways Sky Key makes money that customers might not be aware of?
No. Our entire business is dependent on how well we deliver for our customers. We are completely focused on saving you money when your flight prices drop after booking.
