When Should I Not Use Sky Key?
We work extremely hard to make Sky Key the best flight savings tool possible, but it doesn’t always make sense to use it. If you fall into one of the following groups, we don’t recommend using Sky Key:
1. You only book basic economy tickets
Unfortunately, Sky Key can’t get you savings on basic economy tickets. Airlines don’t allow it. But there is some irony here.
People who book basic economy tickets often pay more and get less. Yes, you read that correctly.
We often see customers who buy basic economy tickets (the worst ticket), PAY MORE than customers who book better tickets.
Why? Drumroll please… When you book better tickets (main/economy), Sky Key gets activated. In other words, Sky Key will save you money if your ticket price drops. We can usually get your price paid below what a basic economy ticket holder pays.
Long story short, by avoiding basic economy and using Sky Key, you can very often pay less than people who buy basic economy tickets.
2. You only book flights through online travel agencies (OTAs) / credit card travel portals
If you book flights through companies like Expedia, Skyscanner, Chase Travel, American Express Travel, Sky Key can’t get you savings.
Why? Have you ever tried to change/cancel a flight booked through an OTA. Spoiler alert, it’s not fun. An airline wants you to book through their website. Therefore, by booking your flights directly through the airline’s website, you unlock additional benefits (e.g., more flexibility, loyalty rewards, and our personal favorite… Sky Key being able to save you money when your ticket price drops).
Regardless if you use Sky Key to save money on your flights, we don’t recommend booking through OTAs/travel portals and suggest booking directly through the airline.
3. You fly once a year
If you only fly once a year, it doesn’t make sense to use Sky Key. Most savings Sky Key gets you come back as credits. These credits typically expire within one year. So if you only fly once per year, odds are your credit will expire before you can use it.
If you fly more than once a year, we highly recommend using Sky Key to save money on your flights. You can use the savings to reduce to cost of your next flight. It’s really easy. Get started in two minutes by uploading your flights.
